The Emerald City

  • Often referred to as an island, Coronado is actually a peninsula surrounded by three bodies of water: the Pacific Ocean, San Diego Bay, and Glorietta Bay. In the early days of settlement, the “strand” would occasionally flood at high tide. Before the Coronado Bridge was built in 1969, automobile ferries were the only connection to this vibrant beach community, which added to the misnomer of it being an island.

Do This Not That

  • When I was in high school, my electronics teacher had a silly, fortune cookie-type saying to remind students of how to handle electrical wires: “One hand in pockey, no get shockey.” Like touching wires with both hands, there’s an old way of doing most anything. For example, listening to cassette tapes on a Walkman, connecting to the Internet with a modem, and wearing leg warmers on the treadmill could all be considered by most as “old ways” of doing things.

Seriously Sweet

  • Valentine’s Day will soon be upon us once again. It rolls around each year and the mind turns to flowers and chocolates; at least that is what the women in our lives want us to think about. Some even have chocolate addiction, or should we call them cravings.

  • When we moved to San Diego our dining choices were Lubach’s, Mr. A’s, the Grant Grill and Jack In The Box (for a different kind of dining experience), and long forgotten restaurants, most of which no longer exist. The Chart House was new and helped to launch the steak and salad bar concept. While working in a downtown office location I went to restaurants near to the office, none of which exist any longer. Downtown became a ghost town in the evenings.
